Meeting CHQ

Land Rover Life first met CHQ when we towed Snowball out of a sticky situation. Debbie Forster catches up with the Cryle Family, who really do put family at the heart of their club.

First off, tell us who you all are and about the vehicles you drive

Mark and Veronica (Ronny) we have been looking after Shrek a big green 110 for close to the last twenty years.

I’m Sam the clubs administrator and the owner of Tommy the newest member of the club arriving in Dec 2024, he’s a 300TDI 90 thats mechanically sounds now after a new Red Chassis and a bit of tinkering but his looks are a work in progress, I have big plans so look out for him in the future.

You’re a club, can you tell us about it and what you do together?

[M&V] We are a true family club we attend a number of shows and have at least one holiday a year as a full group. We are keen members of Tea on the tailgate in Yorkshire and Merseyside

[Sam]We’re a close-knit family club brought together by our shared love for Land Rovers and the adventures they take us on. Each of us owns a different Land Rover, and while they all have their quirks, that’s part of the fun—we love spending time together tinkering, fixing, and modifying them.

Our weekends often involve heading out on camping trips, from organized sites to more remote wild camping spots where we can really get off the beaten track. Whether we’re exploring new places, sharing stories around the campfire, or lending a hand under the bonnet, it’s all about spending quality time together, learning from each other, and enjoying the journey—both on and off the road.

How did the club come into existence?

[M&V] We are a family that all proudly own land rovers and love to travel and go camping

One day we thought can we not become a club and so we did we became the most exclusive Land Rover club where if you know you know.

We attended as many Land Rover shows and gatherings as we can throughout each year.

But we do occasionally venture of and do our own Land Rover trips in other places like Scotland and Wales.

All in all we are just a family who are passionate about Land Rovers and adventure

[Sam] We have always attracted a lot of attention at shows, campsites and on our travels and would often get asked what club we were affiliated with, so after hashing out the idea we voted it in as a family and CHQ Landrover club was born.

What are your favourite vehicle(s) and why?

[M&V] Our favourite Land Rover has changed over the years for years We were truly lucky to own our favourite Snowball, a 1990 white 90 with a bomb proof 200tdi fitted, but we lost him last year never to be seen again. So now it has to be a rag top Series One just because of its rawness just 100% true driving, but without a lottery win don’t think we will ever have one. But Shrek is great; he is our daily drive and covers close to 17000 a year. He has taken us all over the UK and Europe especially when the kids were in the Army stationed in Germany.  Over the years we’ve had so much fun in and around Shrek, we went to Andora with our mam and dad every day passing through customs  to France or Spain. we attracted more and more customs staff every time.  but both never found the safe. The latest adventure being last year with our son and daughter with their families.  We did the NC500!  Everyone loved it. The scenery is truly breath-taking,  and you would swear those bloody midges have teeth.

[Sam] I know I should say Tommy but actually Shrek is my club favourite, he is the ultimate zombie apocalyptic vehicle fully equipped to live out of and to go anywhere.

Tell us about your adventures? Do you have any places you like to visit?

[M&V] This year is Wales using the great off grid camp website we’ll be totally self-contained.  Shrek is kitted out with extra fuel capacity balanced with a 75 litre water tank, fridge/freezer,  solar panel with built in storage.

[Sam] We are slowly working our way around the UK having recently completed the NC500 last summer.

Do you do much off roading? Do your vehicle(s) have any modifications or quirks added to them?

[M&V] The most recently added bits would be a large set of metal longhorns and a pa system!  You should see the look on cyclists faces when your voice booms out. That traffic light was red! And still is! Great fun.

[Sam] I have done in Snowball but currently can’t go off roading yet with Tommy as he isnt ready but once he has some more protection there will be no stopping us.

Do you have any places you like to visit?

[Sam] Shell Island in Wales is a firm favourite, we can get where other campers can’t, enjoy the sand dunes and get the fire pit going.

Do you do much off roading?

[Sam] I have done in Snowball but currently can’t go off roading yet with Tommy as he isn’t ready but once he has some more protection there will be no stopping us.

Do your vehicle(s) have any modifications or quirks added to them?

[Sam] Tommy is a working progress. I am very proud of my painting skills, but as for Gucci upgrades I’m sorry to disappoint, I’m not sure my Ice Hockey Goalies mounted on the front ash tray count!

Do you have any funny stories to share with your Land Rover(s)?

[Sam] I have yet to figure out why Tommys wipers come one when it’s not raining but my lights are on and I indicate left, put my full beams on or use my horn, makes me and whoever is in the cab laugh every time, I will get round to fixing it eventually!

Where can readers follow your adventures online?

[M&V] You can find us on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/chq20_20/

Is there anything else you want to add or tell us about?

[M&V] Can we just add if you’re thinking that a Land Rover could be what you need in your life IT IS. Get one anyone don’t wait join in with the fun it’s great.

[Sam] We’re a fun, friendly, and approachable bunch who believe Land Rovers are more than just vehicles—they’re part of the family. Whether we’re out on a trail, fixing things up in the driveway, or just swapping stories around the fire pit, it’s always about good times and good company.

We don’t take ourselves too seriously—unless we’re talking about stickers. We love a good sticker (the more, the better), and every one tells a story from an adventure we’ve had or a place we’ve explored.

If you’re into camping, chatting, a bit of tinkering, and plenty of laughs, come say hello.
