Waterside Weekend ’24

Land Rover Life’s first camping and green laning trip was held in the Spring of 2024.

The campsite is located in the beautiful hills of Edale

Fellow Land Rover Life admin Emma Snowball and I had been discussing about a camping weekend in the Peak District for some time, and after way too much procrastination we decided to pull our finger out and just get it sorted. The farm we arranged, located in Edale, belonged to a Series Land Rover fan, so from the get-go we had the farmer on side.  Plans were put in place and a Greenlane route around the local area was mapped out. A couple of weekends before Ann & Richard Trusson joined me in a recce of the lanes, where we happened across a group of young cavers in a small quarry area (being led by Kai, Ann and Richards son) who ended up joining us for the rest of the day!

It wasn’t just young cavers we found in the Quarry. This Freelander 1 looks to have been stolen by joyriders and set alight.

The event was a co-hosted event with the newly formed Series I,II,III club and come the camping weekend, we had around 14 vehicles camping with a few more joining for the day on the Saturday. We had a great mix of old hands attending as well as a few newcomers. The weekend was a laid-back affair, with some people going greenlaning and others just sat enjoying the beautiful countryside. One couple event decided to climb a local hill, the mad fools!!

The day took us around the local area with some stunning scenery. We had three different groups go out and all came back having thoroughly enjoyed their day. One group had a member of the local cave rescue join them, so on the way home they got treated to a tour of their HQ!

For some members it was their first time out greenlaning

Come the evening we all held a communal BBQ and gathered in the barn to reflect on our day. Come Sunday the previous day had taken its toll, however. Not one but two of the Land Rovers suffered issues. One was able to get home under its own steam, albeit not towing the caravan it came with – this had to be collected the following day with a different Land Rover! The second had major clutch issues and had to be left at the site for a few days until it could be recovered. I guess that’s why we like Land Rover’s right? They are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you are going to get when you venture out!

The weekend was deemed a success, and we have decided to make this an annual event. We will be holding this on the weekend again – Click here for details!
