On the 22nd July, JLR announced a new member of the Range Rover Family, called the Range Rover GT, and it is quite a departure from the rugged go anywhere off road machines that helped Land Rover get to where it is today.

In a reflection of modern tastes and requirements, the GT is a sleek SUV cross over akin to the Audi and Porsche offerings, rather than a full blown SUV. Previously Land Rover’s most road focused model was the Range Rover Velar, however that mantel now belongs to the GT. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Velar now.

The interior takes the minimalist theme further than any other Land Rover product, with a clean, airy and bright interior dominated by a central touch screen.

Little is known, technically, about the GT other than it is based on the newly developed EMA platform and will the the first all electric vehicle in the Range Rover family of vehicles. I was expecting, like many others, that the Range Rover L460 EV would take that honor so this announcement comes as a bit of a surprise to say the least. Whilst it will be launched as an battery only EV, Land Rover have said they plan to bring out a hybrid version option later in the vehicles lifespan.

Good news for British manufacturing is the fact that the GT will be manufactured at JLR’s Halewood facility along side the current Evoque and Discovery Sport

The development of the GT is in an advance stage with prototype vehicles conducting final on-road testing. The Range Rover GT is said to be “the most technologically sophisticated Range Rover ever created”, so I for one await more details.
