May the shows Be With You
May has been a whirlwind of shows for those in the Land Rover community as Ian reflects.
As I reported last month, Land Rover season is now in full swing and as I write this, I have just completed three different shows in as many weeks. Hundreds of miles have been driven, hundreds of photos taken and lots of money has been spent on fuel, food and drink. I’m not going to lie, it’s been brilliant. Yes, my wallet needs a sit down and I am knackered, but it has been fun. First up was the Gaydon show, which meant an early start as I was planning to do this one in a day, as we decided not to have a stand at this one. Next up was the Castlewood 4×4 show, which was the first camping weekend of the year which meant a lot of sorting out of equipment that hadn’t been used since last September. You can read about both these shows in this issue of LRLife. Finally, there was the LRM show in Malvern, traditionally one of the best shows of the year, and there will be a report in the next issue of this e-Zine.
As I said it has been a blast, but its not just the vehicles that makes the show. It’s the people. At every show I bump into people I haven’t seen in ages, we catch up, we gossip and we talk Land Rover’s. As you do more shows the circle of people you know increases, meaning there are more people to chat too at the next show. You also get to meet people that you have chatted too online, finally getting to put a face to a name.
At Castlewood our stand was next to a new group, who decided to put a stand on at the 11th hour. The leader of the group called Grace, was a young lady who had never done anything like this before. We spent ages chatting and sharing advice, and it really was great to see young people getting involved in the club scene and being enthusiastic about their vehicles.

Above – Despite all of the Banter, the club always comes together to help each other sort out our Land Rover challenges.
When we attend the weekend shows and put a stand on, we always manage to fill our allotted spaces. In the evenings we usually gather together and share stories and banter, and those evenings just fly by. There is always a great feeling of camaraderie on our stands. Sure, we all make fun of each other, but when there is a problem, everyone clubs together to help you sort it. If you fancy being a more active part of our community, please let us know. We are planning club stands at the York Land Rover Show and the LRO show at Belvoir castle.
June will be a quiet month in terms of events, so this means that the spanners will be out as I do some much-needed maintenance on the fleet ahead of July. Minty needs a full service and some general TLC (two new doors for example!) and Eeyore suffered an overheating issue, meaning a full engine and radiator flush before being filled again with Anti-freeze. Then there is Timmy the 1968 I am rebuilding. The list of chores is never ending, but hey it keeps me out of trouble doesn’t it?
