Can living your Best Land Rover Life help with the winter blues?
Words / Picture – Ian M. Garner
Like many I find the winter months a struggle. With the cold, damp and dark, there can sometimes be little reason to leave the house. However, for those who like to live their Land Rover Life all year round the snow can bring adventure. White laning adds a different dynamic to the usual lanes we tread during the summer months. The scenery can look resplendent in a fresh coat of pure white snow as well. Some of us even like to go out with a tow rope to help those in need during the difficult driving conditions. Over the years I have done all the above, but then I realised – it’s not really where my heart is anymore.
It then dawned on me. As much as I hate to say it, I believe I have become a fair-weather Land Roverist! The work list on my Land Rovers grows. As I look out the window I think, I should really go out and get some of them jobs done. But then a warm coffee and the central heating always gets the better of me.
So, something had to be done! Over this Christmas break I vowed to use my Land Rovers more and an opportunity quickly presented itself. You see, I got involved in a rescue mission yesterday, which got me out of the house and into wilds. A friend’s son had a car accident on Snake Pass in Derbyshire, and I offered to go help recover the vehicle. The good news was there were no injuries with all involved walking away with nothing more than a bruise ego, but that is more than could be said for the vehicle. A hefty front collision and a roll had taken its toll, and the vehicle would not move under its own steam.
With recovery strops loaded and trailer attached, a few of us set off for the hours drive to Snake Pass. Normally the route from my house to Snake Pass is very picturesque, but fog and mist meant we only saw a glimpse. Arriving at the scene, we quickly formed a plan and using a hand winch and manual labour the car was loaded and safely strapped to the trailer.
When I got home it did make me realise, that when I had a reason to leave the house, I actually enjoyed the drive and what little scenery I could see. And that’s the crux. Don’t let apathy get in the way of an adventure. So, as I sit here, I am planning a greenlaning route in North Yorkshire with some of the Land Rover Life crew. The change of scenery and fresh air will work wonders in combatting my usual winter blues, as will a freshly cooked full English in a small Yorkshire café – which does seem an ideal starting point for the day!
So, there you go. Your next Land Rover adventure is just waiting for you round the corner. If you blink you may miss it.
